BRIEF

To produce a comprehensive catalog that lists and showcases the diverse range of artwork located within the Montreal metro system.

context

The metro stations of Montreal are adorned with a diverse array of public art, showcasing the work of both established and emerging artists. From murals to sculptures, the artwork found in the metro offers a unique cultural experience to commuters and visitors alike. The pieces range from abstract and contemporary to traditional and figurative, with some even incorporating interactive elements. The Montreal metro art program began in the 1960s and has since grown to include over 70 works in 34 stations, making it one of the largest public art collections in North America.

Approach

Extensive research was necessary to create a relevant image for the project, which ultimately led to the concept of movement being the central element of the project. Movement is found in art, time, and also with the metro itself, and was therefore symbolized by an arrow, incorporated throughout the book. The minimal layout of the catalog was designed to showcase the artworks, while the different coloured papers were added as a final touch to facilitate navigation for the user. Overall, this project allowed for a thoughtful curation of the artwork found in the Montreal metro, as well as for the visual language.

outcome

Overall, creating a comprehensive catalog of the artworks found in the Montreal metro was a fulfilling experience that allowed for a deeper appreciation of the art in public spaces, where it was particularly interesting to learn more about my city’s history and culture.
