context

Arnold Schoenberg is now considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century and a pioneer in avant-garde music. Composer, music theorist, teacher, writer, and painter, his work explores themes like war and discrimination, as well as love and unity. He is the first one to use motifs, a repeated sequence of notes, so as to create visuals through sounds. His work still influences numbers of musicians and is still celebrated all around the world.

Approach

Scanography proved to be a good alternative for illustrating Schoenberg’s work. Used in the matter of creating the main artwork for the campaign, it showcases the unique musicality of his work and the way each piece interacts. The combination of vibrant colours and typography creates a classic feel that is reminiscent of Schoenberg’s music, while also incorporating a contemporary approach to design, that is successfully appealing to both younger and older audiences. The typography complements the artwork’s movement, while simultaneously providing contrast and structure to the final design.

outcome

The campaign incorporates a modern touch to the work of this major composer of the 20th century while effectively conveying his distinctive musicality through visual means.
