To create a visually impactful and thought-provoking poster that conveys the severity of child neglect and its consequences while also prompting viewers to take action.
context
Child neglect is a prevalent issue in Canada, with 235,842 cases of child maltreatment reported in 2019, and it is the most common form of child maltreatment that can lead to long-term physical, cognitive, and emotional effects. The issue of child neglect is a sensitive and complex one, and it is unfortunately all too common. Often, the relatives of a neglected child may not even be aware of the extent of the child's suffering on a daily basis. This underscores the importance of creating a powerful and thought-provoking poster to raise awareness and start a conversation about this crucial issue.
Approach
In order to bring attention to the issue of child neglect, the project aimed to create a powerful visual that would highlight the reality of the child's experience, rather than just presenting statistics, like we often see, and replace the actual child’s story. This was achieved through the use of a pixelated image, which, when viewed from afar, revealed a larger picture of a child. The slogan "One 2 Many" was also used to emphasize the importance of giving neglected children a voice. Smaller images of children were incorporated into each pixel of the main image, representing the number of cases reported every year and highlighting how close neglected children may be to us, even if we are unaware of their situations.
outcome
This project allowed me to address an important issue in a unique way that diverged from the typical approach. It also provided me with an opportunity to utilize AI to create cohesive and lifelike images, while also pushing me out of my comfort zone in terms of design style.
